On November 21st, 2005, I did my very first DJ Enigma broadcast on The Cape.
Wow. How time flies.
The past five years with The Cape Radio have been quite the journey. In retrospect, despite the bumps here and there, I'd have to say it's been a fulfilling, rewarding experience. I've learned a great deal, discovered music I probably wouldn't have otherwise and I've been introduced to stuff I certainly wouldn't have come across on my own. Moreover, it's been an amazing creative outlet for me. If it weren't for The Cape, I doubt I would've produced what is effectively a music album. And obviously all those fun collaborative endeavors wouldn't have happened. "Purple Passion" alone would've been enough of an accomplishment to tout, but over the years--and with the contributions of a lot of talented people--I've created hours upon hours of original audio content.
I'm proud of that. It makes for a good feeling.
But perhaps most importantly, I've had the opportunity to be part of one of the best communities to be found in the MMO-universe, if not in all of the interwebz. Seriously. Were it not for the people hereabouts, I wouldn't have lasted two years on City of Heroes, nevermind six (going on seven now).
And that's why I make this announcement to everyone at once--listeners, staff, and management alike--because, to me, The Cape has always been, first and foremost, a community. That's what it's all about. In my view, the online radio gig is, and always has been, just a means to an end. It's a facilitation of connection, an anchor point, a communal campfire. In the final analysis, all the effort, all the work... it isn't for the station, but rather for the people who've gathered around it... people who're not just a passive audience, but active participants. A very important distinction, that.
However, as the saying goes, all good things must come to an end. I think it's come time for me to retire from active duty as a Cape DJ and as management staff.
Don't worry, this doesn't mean I'm heading out the door completely. If everyone's okay with it, I'll stay on as a backup DJ and likely an occasional contributor. But weekly streamholds, special shows, event production and so on... from all of that, I need to move on. I only have so much time and energy, and I need to start applying them to other things.
I want to thank everyone who's listened to my presentations and streamholds, participated in the events I've put together, and come to my shows to hang out and roleplay. I want to thank the people who've been constants year in and year out, gobbling up my music and giving me ample doses in return. I want to thank the people who start asking me about Chalet Interlude as early as July or August. I want to thank the people who've had to make "song acquisition lists" due to the Stream of Subconsciousness. I want to thank everyone who's posted in the Roleplay and Fiction, and Art Gallery forums, and everybody who makes it a point to hang around the Cape Lounge (there was a time when that just didn't happen). I want to thank anyone who's ever randomly declared "just get in the box!", "loom-in-ar-ee", "Nachonomicon!", "head mouse!" or anything else from the parody commercials. I want to thank all the DJs that've provided endless enjoyment for me, as a listener, and The Cape in general for inspiring me to make things like "Culture Shock!" and the Brutomax remix.
And I even want to thank that Tenchi guy for putting all of this in motion six years ago (even though he had no idea what he had or the potential in it).
My anniversary and retirement show, Heropolitan (v.3), will be aired this coming Friday. I hope you'll be listening in.
Have a great holiday ("Thursday" to you Canadians), and of course...
<DJ Enigma> ...stay super! </DJ Enigma>

As long as there's an occasional stream hold or a special event show, I'm fine with it. I find your shows to be very, very different, exploring music that is definitely well outside the mainstream, but still great. Will there be Chalet Interludes?

I wanted to be the first reply, but my darn password reset got in the the way! It is hard to post here without separating things out from my fangirl persona, since what I would say OOC and IC are very similar, albeit delivered with a different tone. As someone who has followed your Cape career from the moment it began, I've really enjoyed the whole experience immensely. Your polish and professionalism and commitment to this endeavor are, I think, no small part of the success The Cape has enjoyed. And it's added SO much to the Virtue community. It goes beyond just common shared experiences at shows. We also get to share references and our own little memes (Flashlight lubricant, anybody?) that make us all smile and feel a part of a larger community. In at least one case, one of your spots even spawned a supergroup Would there still be a Cape Radio after all these years without a DJ Enigma? Probably. But would it be nearly as special a thing? I don't think so. I have a lot of great memories that I shall cherish long after the (hopefully remote) day that the server heads into the sunset, and a lot of those memories revolve around DJ Enigma and The Cape. Thank you so much for letting me share in the last five years! The Conundrum Kid

Even if you retreated entirely, I'd still be tapping at your virtual window. I will never be able to avoid my natural anxieties about the endings of anything, but I'm at a point where I kind of sort of hazard that I can understand where you're coming from. And you are part of the reason why I am at that point! If it wasn't for you, I would never have had the confidence to begin messing around deeper in Garageband, which is a keystone part of the snowflake that shoved my boulder down the hill of digital media over the last 3 years. Without the opportunity to do voicework for you, and without that push you gave me to play around with the doofy song Jacob and I made up while I was in Japan in late 2007, I'm not sure if I'd now have a modestly successful time as a weekly podcast host/editor for over 2 years running + the Youtube/TGWTG video production hobby that's slowly dominated my spare time. It's entirely your chaos-theorized doing that I now have a completed cover of a Lady Gaga song on Soundcloud. What's funny is I distinctly remember a point where we hardly talked, and the present where we speak as awesome IMin' palz, but I can no longer recollect exactly how the bridge was extended. I'm very happy that it happened though, even if I've been more absent from things for the last year or two, and even if I've often had to catch only the tail-end of a lot of your Cape Radio shows. There's no reason for me to suddenly dump a boulder of gush on your mailbox other than the fact that the word "retirement" always runs straight down into my marrow, I admit. I could keep unloading ramble for hours. So I gotta say what needs to be said. You are one of the most inspiring people I have never met, and no matter what you do or where you go, you will have to live with being responsible for the monster you helped create.

All good things must end someday, autumn leaves must fall..... I'm sure it was not a decision that came lightly, or quickly. As always, Real Life > Game and that includes making sure what you put your time, your enthusiasm, and your stress into is something you enjoy above all else. Glad you will be around in the background, lurking

The Cape will be different without your regular presence, and, dare I say it, the Cape will be less without your regular presence.
There's more I could say, but it would be easy to accuse me of waxing sentimental. And sentimental wax is so difficult to remove.

One of the things that drew me to The Cape and have me stick around was all the work you did, with the Interlude shows in Gemini Park and if it wasn't for the ads that you created over the time you worked here like the Knives of Artemis Recruitment, El Supernatural Mexicano and Crey Power Cola, I wouldn't have tried my hand at submitting an idea for an ad which became the Red Beast commercial. Your work brought an extra something special to The Cape and it showed in everything you produced, from the ads to Purple Passion to the intros and identification spots you made for Pyrotechnyx and other shows among other things. Your hard work and creativity has brought so much to The Cape and the community as a whole, and I understand that need to step away and do what you need to do to move forward in your life outside The Cape. It doesn't mean that you won't be missed, so don't even get that thought in your head Your dedication and hard work will never be forgotten, and I think I speak for everyone when I say thank you for everything that you have done and wish you the best in your future outside the game with the hope that you may at least stop by from time to time and let us know how things are going. Ashes to ashes, DJ Pheonyx

Enigma, I barely knew ye. I've loved your stuff and it is exceptional. Hopefully we will be able to maintain the high quality of audio work and parody commercials. Good luck. Don't be a stranger. And let me pick your brain on occasion.

I just heard the announcement myself (this is what I get for not scrolling down on the front page more regularly), and I can honestly describe the feeling as "thunderstruck". HOWEVER! However. I can understand that, indeed, all good things must come to an end. I can also echo other people's statements that your shows and the various Interludes were nothing short of enjoyable every time, and I was introduced to a dearth of new music that otherwise, I can honestly say I would not have been exposed to. And then there was the advertisements. Those wonderful, wonderful advertisements. It always, always puts a smile on my face, hearing "EL SUPERNATURALE MEXICANO!" And a slew of others. I've downloaded everything I possibly could that you've made, I can honestly say. I'm not gonna lie. I'm really, really, really sad to see you go - though it's not like we'll never see each other again. But I wish you nothing but happiness and success in all that you do. And I shall bend over BACKWARDS if that's what it takes to get to any special shows you might do. You know, this message feels too short, but if I drag it out any more, I'm going to trip over my own words or end up repeating myself again and again and again and a...well. I rest my case. XD *glomps DJE*

I don't think anyone would dare argue against the fact that you have had a profound impact on this station and its content, and your presence will be greatly missed. One nice thing about The Cape though, is you're always welcome when you want to come home. I do hope we'll be able to get at least one Chalet Interlude out of you before you ride off into the sunset, though. Just for old times sake?

My music collection has changed from finding new stuff on the show. There's even a note on my Facebook page mentioning your influence, among others.
Mrwrk and I will both miss the shows...there's a lot of stuff there that I don't tend to hear elsewhere. We both want to express our appreciation for what you've given us over the years. Thank you.
Our fingers and paws are crossed for a generous salting of fill-in shows and Chalet Interludes.
*Raises a glass of fish-nog to the DJ*
I'm currently out-of-game, but if I don't re-sub this week, the kitten and I will still be listening.
