Well, I'm making strides toward getting a carnivorous plant terrarium set up in my apartment... and thought I'd post a few pics of the plants I used to have growing at my old place.

Drosera capensis red form. (Known as a Cape sundew.. appropriate, huh? :D )

Thanks, Shecky. They're a lot easier to grow than you might think.

Very nice! I had a Venus Flytrap for years - it survived everything but a kitty. I loved feeding that plant, though. Your pitcher plants need cute little frogs living in them.... ^_^

Actually, there's one form of pitcher plant (Heliamphora genus) from the top of certain plateaus on Brazil that are known to host frogs in the pitchers. One theory is that the frogs and plants have a symbiotic relationship created due to the limited insect population in that environment. The pitcher plant produces nectar, luring insects to the trap, the frog eats the bug, and the frog's droppings fall into the water at the bottom of the pitcher, where they are broken down and absorbed by the plant as fertilizer.

Very cool plants, Coz... I don't think that I have the patience to do gardening.

These are actually easier than you'd think, in some cases. A good book on the subject is The Savage Garden by Peter D'Amato. Covers everything... water, feeding, setting up terrariums (if that's your thing), propagation... the works.

Just found this slideshow of carnivorous plants being grown at the California Carnivores nursery. Check it out... AWESOME photos of some spectacular carnivores!

Cool slideshow, Coz! Some amazing color variations there. I wish I had a better sense of scale on some of those pitchers, though...I got the sense some were pretty huge!

*ponders gardening on a small scale*

Nepenthes do get huge, in some species... I've seen a Nepenthes truncata with traps about 2 feet deep and 1 foot circumference.

Sarracenia plants with the trumpet-shaped pitchers tend to top out around 18" tall in cultivation, but are much smaller in circumference, plus they narrow toward the base.

Here's another pic I found of my old collection... this is a Sarracenia pitcher plant cultivar called Sarracenia x 'Dana's Delight'.
