Ironically, the pouty lip is ineffective, as well as the more traditional 'stare of contempt' many women get down after observing their mothers, more provocatively and colloquially known as 'The Look' by men everywhere. As a teenager, my best friend was another gutter-child like myself (although saying it that way makes me feel like Oliver Twist) and she was a master at those looks. Twist your heart up in knots, pull out your intestines and festoon them around your neck like a bow. It was uncanny. She did it -just- to harass people.

In a way, she immunized me against it. I don't even choke up passing those "Somewhere, a child is dying right now.. and -you're- too poor to send -them- money?! Bourgeois!" posters, but cats? Cats still get me. And that picture is like Cuteness-Nerve-Toxin.
