Tenor Luciano Pavarotti dead at 71
(CNN) -- Famed opera tenor Luciano Pavarotti, who appeared on stage with singers as varied as opera star Dame Joan Sutherland, U2's Bono and Liza Minnelli, died Thursday after suffering from pancreatic cancer.
Pavarotti, who was 71, died at his home in Modena, Italy.
The portly singer retired from staged opera in 2004, but was on a "farewell tour" of concerts when he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2006 and underwent emergency surgery to remove the tumor.
Although the remaining concerts of his tour were canceled, his management said that he hoped to resume the tour in 2007.
But in early August, Pavarotti was hospitalized in Modena with a fever and released 17 days later after undergoing diagnostic tests.
Pavarotti is survived by his wife, Nicoletta Mantovani, and a daughter, Alice, along with three grown daughters by his first wife, Adua Veroni, whom he divorced in 2000, and a granddaughter.
....
*sigh*
One of the greatest singers the world will ever see. Of all the male opera singers I have heard over the years, Pavarotti has always been my favorite.
He was the first operatic tenor I can remember hearing, listening to my mother's recordings when I was a little kid. He was the reason I developed what interest I have in opera music.
A tremendous loss to the world. So very sad.

I'm going to play some selections of Pavarotti's performances during my Sept. 9 show.

Just sad.
The man had an amazing voice... his version of "Largo al factotum" from the "Barber of Seville" was what got me interested in collecting the operatic music I've got.
I will miss him.

I will also be playing a set (at least one) of Pavarotti's music during my show on Monday.
Having studied voice with Placido Domingo and being a singer myself, I can say with sadness that there never has been and never shall be another voice like Big Luciano's. His loss is one from which music will never recover.
There are two quotations from today's commentary that I would like to share.
From Bono, of U2 -- He was "a great volcano of a man who sang fire but spilled over with a love of life in all its complexity."
From a random fan who posted on CNN's news blog -- "Heaven's choir just gained its lead tenor."

There's some comfort in his passing -- a number of people who, be they die-hard metal fans, tough-as-nails rap afficionados or just simply not big into "the opera," having just recently heard him sing and say things like: "Shit, man, that guy had pipes."
Yup. He's still got it.
