The other day I used up the last bit of my shampoo and conditioner and was thinking about my options. I could get more of the same, I could get something new, or I could try something I've been thinking about for a few years now... no 'poo.

No, this does NOT have anything to do with the other end of the body, what I'm talking about is getting your hair clean without using shampoo. I'd read several articles about this, all with very similar recipes for what to use to clean your hair, and the same ingredients; baking soda and water. I decided to use the recipe given here for my shampoo replacement, and the recipe here for my conditioner/rinse replacement. I tried them both out tonight and I have to say, my hair feels pretty good. It's just as soft as if I'd used the commercial stuff, and it has a rather pleasant scent from the combo of the apple cider vinegar and lemon juice. I normally have trouble with tangles while my hair is wet, but I was able to run my wide toothed comb through just fine after my shower.

I'm not saying this idea is for everyone, but I do think I'll keep giving it a go, maybe even replacing some of the water in the recipes with teas of different sorts. So, there ya go, something new for the new year.

It's hella cheap, completely biodegradable, and I CAN'T STOP PLAYING WITH MY HAIR! It's so soft *grins*.

I think my next green conversion may be what I use for deodorant. I'll let y'all know.

Let me chime in here.

First off, her hair is softer than I've felt it in a long time. Second, if you're worried that your hair is going to smell like vinegar, don't. While the scent is subtle, and you have to be right on top of her hair, you can tell there's a very faint floral/citrus smell. I verified - it is her hair, and not her body wash (which she hasn't changed yet). And as someone that has watched helplessly from the sidelines for over a decade, I can't remember the last time her hair was this tangle-free coming out of a shower.

Again, I can't say this works for everyone - YMMV a lot - but for Amethyst, it's really a noticeable change, after only one application. I can't imagine what's it's going to be like after multiple uses.

I'm not sure when/if I'll change my bodywash. I'm rather in love with the honeysuckle/orange scent of it.

I read on reddit that washing your hair actually damages it but doctors don't mention this because it's not a health issue.

Good luck with your new healthy hair!

There are a number of chemicals in commercial shampoo and conditioner that are not only harmful to your hair, but can also leach into your body and build up there causing a whole host of problems. That's not really why I switched, but it doesn't hurt.
