Let me get these two out of the way. Ahem.

FREEEEEEEEEBIRRRRRRRRRRRD. (edited because this is not in any way, shape, or form, an eight letter word.)

And Sweet Home Alabama.

Now that that's done, let me think. Back to ya in a bit.

Anything by Poco, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Littlefeet, Allman Brothers, Alabama, The Outlaws(Green Grass and High Tides a definite), Charlie Daniels Band (especially Uneasy Rider), Molly Hatchet, The Band, .38 Special, ZZ Top, Marshall Tucker Band, Jackyl, Stevie Ray Vaughn, and Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Elvira - Oakridge Boys (arguably more country than rock, but I still think it's suitable)

If you want to do some newer Southern Rock I also recommend Shinedown, 3 Doors Down, Saliva, and Theory of a Deadman.

I have access to some local Kentucky southern rock/bluegrass bands, but that may not be what you're looking for. But they're open to anyone that's interested.

Traditionally I think of bands like .38 Special, Foghat, Molly Hatchet, and the immortal ZZ Top on the bluesier side, although not having read the whole thread I'm not sure they've been mentioned.

Later days make me think of guys like Hank Williams III and Shooter Jennings (I can sendspace you an album of Shooter's for your review)... you also may want to look into the Kentucky Headhunters (countrier than most, but fun) and Dash Riprock.

I have to go to work, but will suggest more when I have time to type :)

Any idea when's this show gonna be?

Strangely enough, John Fogarty et al. hail from San Francisco, not the bayou...though you'd never know it by their sound.

Also, if you want an object lesson in just how slimy the music biz can be, look at the falling out between CCR and their original label. It led to a situation where John Fogarty was sued for sounding too much like CCR.

I figured it was more about the sound than geography, anyway. Otherwise, The Band wouldn't be considered either.

Levon Helm, the baddest mofo on the musical planet. :)

Further thought also suggests Gram Parsons and/or the Flying Burrito Brothers.
