This one's personal.

Talmon Parker, known in the SCA as Talmon Wilbanks, one of my dearest friends from my time back in Texas, has passed away following was was apparently a massive heart attack. Talmon spent the entire time that I knew him hooked up to an oxygen bottle due to complications from early-onset emphysema, not brought on by smoking. He was, for many years, despite this limitation one of the most vibrant people I had the pleasure of knowing, hosting a monthly archery shoot at his home for years and years and getting many younger people interested in archery by how approachable he was about the topic and how knowledgeable he was once the bug bit.

My favorite story about Talmon and his late wife Adelicia is one that I will treasure all the rest of my days. We were at an officers meeting of the local group, and as the herald of the group I mentioned that since everyone in the room had received their Award of Arms (usually the initial recognition that someone receives in the SCA) they should probably see me to design a coat of arms and get it registered. Talmon pops up with "Well, we don't have OUR AoAs." Which was true. Both he and Adelicia had received multiple awards that GRANTED an Award of Arms, but they had never ACTUALLY received an Award of Arms. Well, I told him in jest that we'll start pushing the Crown to get him their AoAs and thus started the beginning what was a five-month long petition process to recognize both of them. We'd all go off to events and report back to Talmon and Adelicia - "nope, no AoA yet, but we're still trying!" - and it became a running joke between them and the local group. Flash forward to the local Yule event. The Crown's in attendance, I'm heralding for the local baron and baroness, and the Crown's herald calls Talmon and Adelicia forward. Well, they get up and come up, kinda halfway grinning, cause they figure they KNOW what's about to happen, since we've been building it up for so long.

You know when you get someone good, they drop their jaw in shock? The look on both their faces was priceless as the charter awarding them both court baronies was read into Kingdom law.

Talmon's dear wife, Adelicia, preceded him in death by several years. I was still in Texas and was fortunate enough to have been asked to speak at the memorial service for her. We didn't think Talmon was going to make it nearly as long as he did, but Talmon always was a tough old cuss.

This afternoon, Talmon and Adelicia are together again, as they should always and forevermore be, young and fit and healthy, walking through a meadow hand in hand for the first time in ages, because for the first time in ages, Talmon's no longer in need of the cane he used with one hand and the oxygen bottle he pulled behind him in the other.

I've been dreading this day for a long time. Now that it's here, I can't help but feel relief for Talmon that he's no longer suffering.

I'll miss you, Your Excellency, my dear friend.

Crap. Shelby's gone. One hell of a designer, driver and inspiration to other auto enthusiasts. Lousy chicken farmer, though.

OK, this isn't a person, but it was part of what has become a dying breed, an independent, alternative rock radio station. Gave a lot of nationally known acts from Boston and elsewhere their first break on commercial radio including Nirvana, The Killers, Florence and the Machine, and Foster the People. ((Plus, it has been #1 on my car radio preset for a very long time...))

Boston's 101.7 WFNX sold to Clear Channel.

Dude, I'll be honest, I miss having more indie stations around. Clear Channel and the like seem to suck them all up. RIP Indie Radio.

A lack of local non-corporate radio is why I really appreciate the Cape (and some of the other internet/amateur online radio I check out) .
