"Marry me..." Ian repeated with a smile.
"O-okay..." Angelica responded, still in shock. "When?"
"When would you like?"
She thought. "Well, Aerial just got engaged, so I don't want to steal her thunder...maybe we should wait till she's had her ceremony and all..."
Ian nodded and held her closely, smiling. He wished he could have seen just her face when he asked, but the optics didn't allow for him to focus. They showed him everything within periphery as well as directly in front of him. He ran his fingers through her hair and kissed her gently.
At the suggestion of a shower, he smiled and sat up, taking out his optics. She lead him to the master bathroom and they enjoyed a rather steamy shower. Angelica mentioned food and that he needed to eat. He was still rather thin from the toxin. He just smiled to her. As they dried off, she gave him a hug, then ran out into the bedroom to find a t-shirt. He shook his head and chuckled, following after her. She was full of energy and he loved that she was so happy with him.
In the bedroom, he put on a pair of trousers and put in his optics. He went to her and wrapped his arms around her waist. "I love you, Angelica." She smiled and snuggled back against him.
"C'mon. Let's get you fed!" They walked down the hallway to the kitchen and she made him a couple of sandwiches with root beer to drink. He chuckled and started eating. She rummaged through the fridge to find some string cheese.
"That's all you're eating?" he asked with some concern.
"Yeah, I'm not really hungry," she replied, taking a bite of the cheese.
He put down his sandwich and stared at her. "Angelica..."
"Yes?"
"You stayed by my side how many days? Three? You haven't eaten or slept in a week."
"I slept for 20 minutes!" she justified.
He simply stared at her. Had he eyes, they would have betrayed his concern for her. "...Angelica..." She hung her head and munched the cheese.
"You eat up...you...need your strength. I'll be fine."
Reluctantly, Ian sighed and started back on his sandwich. She walked over to him and started rubbing his shoulders--like he always did for her. Lightly running her fingers over his back, she paused at each scar there and kissed it--as if to erase the past pain. He just smiled and shivered a little bit. Her hands slipped around his waist and she rested her cheek on his back. He finished his other sandwich, then smiled and turned around to face her, wrapping his arms around her waist. "You make me so happy, Angelica."
She smiled to him, then lightly touched the flesh near his optics. She knew how much they hurt him and she longed to take that pain away. He smiled to her, but she could sense a hint of sadness. She tilted her head slightly and ran her fingers into his hair. "What's wrong, love?"
"Nothing...just..." he sighed softly.
"Just what?"
"Sometimes I really hate these things."
Angelica smiled softly and very lightly kissed the outer edges of the optics, being sure to allow her lips to touch his flesh. "I know, love. I ...I wish I could help..."
He smiled to her and touched her cheek. "I can see you, but...I can't focus on you."
"Maybe we can get you some new ones. I'm sure Serge could work something..."
He shook his head, "These are the best I could get. I checked. At least...nevermind."
"What? Don't say nevermind, talk to me, love..." Angelica caressed his cheeks, stepping closer to him. He tightened his embrace.
"These aren't my firs set. Arakhan gave me those. She didn't do it out of kindness. Taking my eyes wasn't enough for her." He paused a moment and smiled grimly, "What more is there to say? They allowed me to see, but it felt like gouging my eyes out again and again."
Angelica shuddered. That memory of his would bother her for a very long time. She held him tightly and murmured, "Love, let me see...let me see if I can do anything...at all..."
He smiled to her and kissed her cheek. "These don't hurt that much. Just a dull throb now."
She leaned back and lightly touched his temples. "I would rather you not felt any pain and see clearly."
"When I said I couldn't focus," he began, smiling slightly, "I mean I see everything at once. Optics can't focus on one thing like eyes."
"And when I said 'see clearly,' I meant see exactly what you want to see." He smiled slightly, then lifted his hands and removed his optics, setting them on the table. Angelica blinked. "...I...I meant.... I ... I don't know if I can...r-regenerate your eyes... I meant...m-maybe I could...talk to Serge or...someone..." Her shoulders sank as she began to realize she may have gotten his hopes up.
He simply smiled to her and held her. "I didn't think that's what you meant. And I told you, the pain is as low as it can be, already."
Lightly, she touched the outer edge of his right socket. "Low isn't non-existent." She placed a soft kiss on his brow, then his nose and spoke softly, "Let me pray and see what I can do."
He nodded and held her tightly. In her heart, she pleaded with the Holy One. She was reminded of the Book where the Holy One had said anyone could perform miracles--if they had the faith. Still, Angelica knew that it would not be easy--nor pleasant. After a few moments, she leaned back and kissed his forehead. "...i-if I ... if I can do it... it....may be really painful... I'd....I'd rather put you to sleep for it..."
"I've had worse," he smiled to her.
"Yes, but not from me. I'm your girlfriend. I'm not supposed to hurt you. I don't want to hurt you. I know I have already, but still..."
He hugged her tightly, "I'll still love you, no matter what. Even if it hurts, it will be worth it to see you."
"You worry me with what you're willing to do for me... I'd do anything for you, but...I can't die. You can." She hugged him tightly and closed her eyes. "I don't want to live without you."
"I won't die."
She nodded slightly and let out a soft sigh, then kissed him deeply. He held her closely and they remained for a few moments. She unfurled her wings and wrapped them around him, then broke the kiss. "Alright, Ian. I've been praying in my heart...I have a peace about this. But, I need you to sleep...I don't want you to feel this..."
He smiled to her and nodded. "Where?"
"Where ever you're going to be most comfortable."
He slid from the stool and walked to the wall, leaning against it and sliding down to sit on the floor. He smiled to her and spoke sincerely, "Here. In your care." And with that, he entered his deep meditative trance.
She took a deep breath, whispered another prayer then began to speak ...an unknown language. Her hands glowed--rather, the energy between her hands glowed--and she held the energy just in front of his face. As she finished the first set of words, she slowly pushed the energy forward. The white-hot energy--with all of the heat, but none of the burning--settled onto his eyes but actually cooled the flesh there. Taking another deep breath and swallowing, she whispered, "...forgive me, Ian..."
She placed her hands directly on his eyes and began speaking, again, with the Celestial language. As her words poured forth, the nerve endings within his sockets began to fire on their own, sparking the optic fuses. Her hands absorbed the sparks and as much of the pain as she could, her eyes filling with tears. Still, she continued. As she spoke the language of the angels, she could sense that Ian was dimly aware of the pain. He twitched slightly, but what tore her heart the most were his silent pleas for her to not take on his pain.
She closed her eyes, continuing to speak in Celestial, and kept her hands firmly in place. Once the fuses from the optics were gone, she pulled the fragments to her hands with a gravity alteration. She sighed a moment and shook the particles from her, then returned her hands to their place over his eyes. She closed her eyes and began once more. As quickly as she could cause it to happen, the eye balls themselves began to form at the end of the nerves. They started to grow, pulling nerves and stretching nerve tissue and capillaries as they formed. She pulled more of the pain to herself, to help him bear it. To her, it was the least she could do for causing so much of it. The cooling energy that had settled on his eyes changed. It became more like searing as it began to uncauterize the eyelids and tear ducts. He jerked involuntarily. His silent screams for her to just let him bare the pain fell upon unhearing ears.
She bit her lower lip, tears streaming over her cheeks, but continued the incantation. She opened her eyes and moved her hands briefly, then replaced them, continuing and whispered to him, "....almost love...." She could feel herself growing weaker. The lack of food and sleep and the power of the spell she used began to work together to take their toll.
Silently, he begged her to not endanger herself. She didn't hear him.
As her words began the last part of the incantation, she slowly removed her hands from his eyes, then pulled the energy back to her hands before dispelling it. She looked at him, smiling weakly and breathing hard, "...wake up, love...."
He snapped out of his trance and looked at her with love and concern. His mouth hung open, as if in a scream. He managed to gasp out three words: "I love you." Then, he collapsed into an unconscious heap.
Angelica burst into tears. Perhaps it had been too much--perhaps his body was still too weak to bear--had she killed him? She couldn't reach out to him. Her energy was nearly gone. She, herself, was pale and trembling. Still, she had to be strong for him. She forced herself dizzily to her feet and used a simple gravity alteration to make him lighter. Carrying him to the bedroom, she had just gotten him to the bed and lain down when she collapsed. Struggling to maintain vigil, she knelt beside the bed and reached for his hand. She began to pray, though anyone listening would think it simply incoherent babble.
After a few moments, however, it didn't matter. Her eyes closed and she slipped to her side on the floor, unconscious. _________________ Love & Celestial Kisses,

| My love is like a storybook story. But it's as real as the feelings I feel. -Once upon a Time...Storybook Love |
Ian woke on the bed hours later. His eyes burned like two hot coals in his head, but the pain wasn’t enough to make him pass out again. He blinked, still very sensitive to light. Then he saw her. Ian’s blood froze as he rushed to Angelica’s side. He dropped to the floor next to her, cradling her in his arms. He softly called her name, but Angelica didn’t stir. Ian sat there, rocking her in his lap. He didn’t notice the tears streaming down his cheeks. It seemed like an eternity to Ian before Angelica stirred. She woke, groaning as if she felt very ill. Softly, worry in his voice, he called to her. "Angelica? Angelica, can you hear me?"
Angelica frowned and put a hand to her face, "ugh...yes...I hear you...four of you...tell the other ones to quiet down...."
She slowly put her arms around him and kissed his tears, “Why are you crying, love?”
“A…are you alright?”
She smiled to him, “I will be. How are you?”
Ian closed his eyes and held her. His voice caught in his throat. All he could do was weep.
He finally managed to whisper, "I thought I'd lost you."
Angelica laid her head on his shoulder to reassure him, "I can't die, sweetheart but...I've exhausted myself, I'm afraid."
Ian stoked her hair, then scooped her up and put her on the bed, “Sleep then.”
She closed her eyes, smiling. "...before I go to sleep...go look in the mirror. Did I do it right?"
He stopped as he caught sight of himself. “I haven’t seen them in years…” Ian looked at her as sleep took her. He stood there a moment, marveling at hour peaceful she looked. He bent down to kiss her cheek as a thought occurred to him. Leaving a note telling her he’d be out but return soon he quickly dressed and grabbed a pair of very dark sunglasses before heading out the door. The perfect woman deserved the perfect ring.
Ian squinted as he stepped outside, his eyes still very sensitive. He half ran to Family Jewels hoping they had a ring that would suit Angelica. He stepped inside, grateful the shop was less bright that the daytime sun. He browsed the display cases. There were rings aplenty, but nothing that fit for his angel. White diamonds were too common, and yellow didn’t seem right for her. Platinum didn’t fit either. Sapphires in blue and green were just wrong for what he wanted. Ian wandered the store for over an hour. Some rings might have worked, but they didn’t fit Angelica’s delicate fingers. After all, the perfect woman deserved the perfect ring. Just as he was about to give up, he found it. Tucked in a corner of a display in the back was the perfect ring, a delicate band of white gold with a yellow gold setting. But the stones were what made the ring so perfect. A large pink sapphire flanked by two smaller deep crimson rubies that were a very near match to Angelica’s hair. Her favorite color and his in one ring. Ian knew just by looking that it would fit her finger perfectly. He gladly paid the asking price and rushed back to their apartment.
Quietly he opened the door and went to the bedroom to check on Angelica. Ian found her still sleeping, a smile on her face. He smiled himself and sighed happily at the sight. Nothing made him happier than to see her free of the burden she forced herself to carry, even if it was only for a short while. Ian crumpled his note and tossed it in the trash, then he quietly slipped the finger on her left hand. It was a perfect fit. Then he set the ring’s black velvety box on the nightstand and crawled into bed, wrapping one arm around her before drifting off to sleep.
Several hours later Angelica sat bolt upright with a gasp, eyes wide, like she’d had a nightmare. Ian woke as he felt her move, opening his eyes slowly. He reached one hand up to gently stroke her hair. He asks, “Are you feeling better?”
Angelica smiled and lay back down, putting a hand on his cheek. "Yes, love... how are you feeling?"
Ian smiled to her and kissed her. She frowned when he didn’t reply, "I'm sorry, Ian... You're in more pain than before, aren't you..."
He put a finger to her lips, "It's fading."
Gently he turned her to see the nightstand. She looked at the box curiously and reached for it. She gasped as she saw the ring sitting on her finger.
